The Supreme Court of India took suo motu notice of the Kolkata rape and murder case of the trainee doctor, Dr. Moumita Debnath on August 18, 2024. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud will hear the case on August 20, 2024.
Recently, on August 13, the Kolkata High Court expressed its concerns over the hospital and political authorities, so they transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Remember, this horrific incident took place on the night between 8 august to 9 august. It took place in RG Kar Medical college, which is a 132 years old state run hospital. On the night of August 9, she was resting in the hospital’s seminar hall, where she was barged in on by some monstrous individuals who gang-raped her.
At first, the principal and dean of the hospital tried to turn this incident into a suicide, due to the pressure on them by the local politicians. Her parents were made to wait for 3 hours before seeing their daughter’s body. When the father was allowed to see her, he immediately noted that this was not a suicide case, but a murder – a brutal, horrific, inhumane murder.
But due to the incident being revealed and going viral on social media, they were forced to do a post-mortem. And, the principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, resigned after this.
Her autopsy report revealed that she was raped, brutally. Her pelvic girdle was broken. Her body was found with 150 grams of semen. Now, the surprising thing here is that a man can ejaculate an average of almost 6–8 grams of semen. It means she was gang raped by 15–18 men. All this happened in the seminar hall of the hospital. She also had approximately 135 bite marks on her body. She used to wear spectacles, which were found smashed into her eyes, causing her eyes to bleed. Her entire body was having several injuries and blood.
Major protests took place in whole of india o call for fair investigations of such issues. Recently, The Indian Medical Association (IMA), which has 400,000 active members, called for a 24-hour shutdown strike.
31,000 cases of rape were reported in India in 2022 – these are the latest stats, as after that, the National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) did not publish any data. 31,000 cases in a year equates to 84 cases per day.
