Meta announced on Friday its decision to lift the restrictions imposed on former President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of the upcoming Republican National Convention.
“In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis,”. “As a result, former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the heightened suspension penalties.” Meta said in a statement.
Since his return to Meta’s social networks, Trump has primarily shared campaign information, attacks on Democratic candidate Biden, and memes on his accounts.
The Biden campaign condemned Meta’s decision in a statement on Friday, saying it is a “greedy, reckless decision” that constitutes “ a direct attack on our safety and our democracy”.
Apart from Meta’s platforms, other prominent social media companies, including Twitter (now X), Snapchat, and YouTube, banned Trump due to his online activities related to the January 6 attack.
Trump was permitted to return to X last year following the acquisition of the company by Elon Musk in 2022, although he has not yet posted any tweets since his reinstatement.
In early 2022, Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social.
