Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans to construct a cable car system providing access to the Cave of Hira, located on Mecca’s Jabal Al Noor. Set to launch in 2025, this project aims to facilitate a more accessible pilgrimage experience. The cable car system is nearing completion and is expected to be operational next year.
Once finished, it will offer a modern and convenient means for pilgrims and visitors to reach the high-altitude Cave of Hira. This cave holds great significance in Islamic history as the site where Prophet Muhammad experienced the first revelation of the Holy Quran.
The cable car is an integral part of the comprehensive Hira Cultural District, which was launched last year. Spanning 67,000 square meters, this district is adjacent to Jabal Al Noor. In the past, visitors have faced significant challenges in reaching the Cave of Hira due to the mountain’s height.
To enhance the pilgrims experience while the cable car project is being completed, a life-size model of the cave is available in the Hira Cultural District. This allows pilgrims to explore and understand the site’s importance until they can access the actual cave via the new cable car system.
