US Secretary of State, while talking at an event, said that Iran is just one or two weeks away from producing fissile material – which is necessary to make nuclear weapons. This is the shortest time ever quoted by a US official regarding Iran’s progress toward its nuclear program.
A deal was made by the Obama Administration in 2015, which included Britain, France, and Germany too. It stated that the US would loosen its sanctions on Iran if they allowed strict monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program. But in 2018, the Trump Administration walked out of this deal, calling it “defective at its core”. Trump implemented heavy sanctions on Iran. In 2020, Iranian Military General Qassem Soleimani was killed in an attack; Iran alleged Trump’s direct involvement in this assassination. Trump later described Qassem Soleimani as “The No. 1 terrorist anywhere in the world”.
The Biden administration has tried its best to stop Iran from producing nuclear weapons through indirect negotiations and threats. Antony Blinken further said that the policy of the US is to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
